The final stage of applying for university abroad is to arrive at your chosen university, ready to start your chosen program.
International student enrollment
You may have already enrolled online for your program, but your university may also require international students to meet with them when you arrive to complete enrollment.
International students are usually given a time to attend an enrollment session at the university, this is so the university knows you are in attendance and can check they have the correct information attached to your profile. It’s important you don’t miss any appointments you are requested to attend by the university.
Enrollment also gives you the opportunity to get the necessary access to the university, including your identity card or accommodation access details. This allows you to access everywhere you need to, such as the library.
You’ll also be given any information you need for your subject and program, including when your induction is and how to access the university’s online portal for students.
What you need for international enrollment?
When you arrive at the university you may be asked to show documents in order to complete enrollment. These can include:
- Passport
- Travel documents
- Visa information
- Original qualification certificates
- Any necessary translations and their certification
- Evidence of payment for tuition fees
- Evidence of payment for accommodation fees
Temporary enrollment
If you forget any of the above documents and cannot finish your enrollment, the university may offer you temporary enrollment; this means you can begin your program as planned, however must provide the additional information within a specific time frame. It’s important that you don’t rely on this possibility as it isn’t guaranteed and can cause issues for your visa status.
International student office
Your university will have an international office that deals with support for international students as well as initiatives for the international community as a whole. When you arrive at university it is likely that you’ll be introduced to the international office and told about their services.
This should be your first place to go if you have any issues with your arrival at the university, or are uncertain or unhappy about something. If they can’t directly help they will put you in touch with the correct area of the university to resolve any issues.
International student orientation
As part of their support for international students, the relevant international student office will organize an orientation week especially for those students from overseas. This helps you meet other international students and understand more about where you’ll be living and studying.
You’ll also be able to take part in a university’s wider ‘welcome week’, or similar, that is for all students to participate in. There’s often a lot of focus on choosing activities and sports groups you may want to be a part of, which is a key part of the university experience
Program induction
It’s important to attend your program induction as you’ll be introduced to the members of staff who run and teach your program, and the other students who are taking the same classes. You’ll be told about the materials you need to get, and where the university rooms are that you’ll be using.
